A new urban plan started in 1911 under Japanese rule in Taichung. The new plan emphasized railroad infrastructure, turning the train station into the centre of Taichung, with the railroad in full operation by 1908. Also, by the 1920s, educational institutions were built around this area, near where the Miyahara Residence would be built later on. There was also the Taichung Public School of Commerce, which is now the National Taichung University of Science and Technology. It attracted a lot of middle and high class citizens to move here. That might also be one of the reasons why Dr. Miyahara decided to reside in this place.
